#20 blogfolio

I start off this final blog to say that it has been a great class with you! I have included a picture just in case you forgot who I am lol. 😸

The NETS-T information was obtained from http://people.umass.edu/pelliott/reflections/netst.html

  • Intro video
I was pretty hesitant about this assignment at first because I hate the way I sound, so making a video was very challenging to me. I have no problem with public speaking, but I cannot hear myself when I publicly speak. I thought the assignment helped me out a lot because it allows me to hear how I sound and where I stress my words the most. I could see how many times I paused and used filler words such as um and like. This assignment helped me with my CMS 111 class that is speaking intensive because it showed me how beneficial videoing yourself can be while practicing for a speech. It also allowed me to get to know others in my class right off the bat whereas a regular class would just be name, hometown, and major, if even that. While this assignment was focused on public speaking, it also pushed me to get to the root of why I want to be a teacher and what is pushing me to achieve that goal. I liked having to remember what made me want to teach because I feel like as we go through college, the farther we get into our degree plan, we forget why we even chose to do it in the first place. Doing little assignments like this can help students re-center and remember what pushed them to get this degree and can help push them towards walking across the stage at the end of their time here at Southern Mississippi.

  • Concept map
I absolutely loved this assignment for multiple reasons. I was able to put a plan into action of what I want to teach. I could customize each thing on it to help it flow best with the way my brain thinks. I did find it very tedious to put each individual item in and create new branches from scratch. It was aggravating when I would go to change the color of a branch and it would change the all branches to that one color instead of changing the single branch that I clicked on. I ended up changing the colors and format multiple times until I found one that I thought was easy to read and follow if someone who was not a nutrition teacher to read. Each one was individually edited to help organize all the different sections.  I enjoyed seeing others as well because I was able to see what they were interested in teaching. Each concept map was individualized to each person and their desired teaching route. You were able to have a glimpse into what grade they wanted to each and how they planned to deliver the message to their kids. I will defiantly continue to use this resource to help organize my thoughts and keep things in order. This also helps with the flow of the project because you can clearly see how each part flows into one another. Students and teachers could both benefit from this resource for teaching, studying, or following a timeline of events across the year.

  • Rubric/quiz
I found these two assignments very helpful for the experience. A rubric is used all the time in school systems to help the student and teacher be on the same page with what will be expected of and graded on. With this, the teacher will create the rubric where which will be given to the student. The student would use this along with the directions to create whatever assignment was given to them. This allows the student to be aware of what to focus on for the project. The teacher will use this to grade the assignment and keep consistency. This was helpful because I have never written a rubric before so it allowed me to know what areas I found the most important while also showing me how to set it up on paper. The quiz was also good because it allowed practice to test information and seeing how to use those questions to create data to better understand the knowledge retained. Coming up with quiz questions was a bit tricky because I did not know what questions were too easy and or too hard. That will come with practice, but the format of the quiz was a great thing to learn right now and this assignment taught me that. The only issues I came across with this assignment was creating a rubric without having an actual assignment to base it on. I think it would have helped me if we had created an assignment first and then created a rubric to go along with it.

  • Website
The website was also a favorite of mine. I already have a food blog full of recopies that I love to organize and keep tract of, so this was right up my ally. I enjoys having to put together all my information to fit the required course that I would be teaching along with the class room rules and my resume. I think this could be a very positive resource used by the students and parents. A teacher could make adjustments to the schedule and the students and parents could have an up to date version immediately. I did not have very many problems when doing this project. The only thing I thought was tedious was making the calendar in google docs. It took the longest to put each assignment in for high school and middle school classes along with planning the day to where the times matched up together to allow for them to start at 8 am and end at 3pm. I enjoyed adding all the pictures to go along with the subject. It was fun to color coordinate and put everything together. I also thing that having the web resources is such a good idea because it gives the students a place to go when doing research along with requiring them to find their own sources. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and will keep this in mind when I become a teacher myself. I will plan on having a paper study guide to hand out along with the website for them to refer to whenever they need to.

  • My movie
Movie maker was very fun. Putting all the pictures together brought back memories of the time in the snow. By doing a movie on this, I was able to really talk about the feelings I had regarding the snow. I encountered some issues with this project when I was figuring out how to put the music on it. I could not for the life of me make it work and I eventually had to shut the computer down due to pop-ups, but I did eventually get it to work. This assignment was a bit more difficult only due to the fact that every other assignment was something that I was passionate about or cared about. The only reason I picked the snow was because I knew I could find pictures on it pretty easily and they were good pictures. It was fun reliving the memories of that day but writing about it was hard also. It was hard to talk so much about the pictures because we could only use a few words per slide which did not allow us to form complete sentences. Without sentences, it was hard to for a complete though about the pictures. Another thing that was very tedious was putting the different effects on each slide. The way they entered the screen did give the movie more character and helped understand the feelings behind it. Overall, I enjoyed this project, but I do wish I would have picked a different topic to do it on. I believe I could have made a much better movie if I had.

  • Group story

The group story was fun, but also challenging. I loved being able to be creative and write whatever I wanted to. I even enjoyed having to go after someone, writing about whatever I wanted while still keeping the same flow of the story. I gave each person power to change the way the story was going. I went last so I had to put my own twist into the story while also having to put an ending with it. I do believe that going last was the most difficult out of everybody because I had to keep three different people’s paragraphs in mind where they had to only keep the ones that went before them in mind when writing their part. The place where I had the most trouble with this assignment was making sure everyone did their part. Group projects are always nerve racking because of others not doing their part which affects the overall grade. One in our group was going before me and I could not write my part until he wrote his, which he did not do until he sat down in class they say it was due. I then quickly had to type up the ending to the story really quick. I enjoyed hearing everyone else’s stories because it gave some insight on who they were as a person. I felt like a knew a little more about each person after hearing their stories which helped me enjoy the class more. This helped enjoy the class more because I could talk to everyone in the class and hold a conversation with them instead of everyone ignoring each other and I believe that this assignment helped with that.

  •     Overall class reflection

Overall, this class was really fun. I enjoyed all of the assignments that we did and learned a lot of information. To be honest, I was not sure what to expect from this class. I did not think I would learn that much because I like to consider myself tech-savvy, but boy was I wrong. There is always so much to learn besides the basics like PowerPoint and word. I learned lots of new websites references to keep in mind when I do become a teacher to refer back to and use whenever I need. I can now create a rubric, had some practice on making quizzes, learned a lot of new ways for doing lecture without just standing up and talking non-stop. One of the biggest things I took away from the class did not have to do with technology.
In this class, we were challenged every day with our opinions. Every day was a battle with differences of opinions and one of the biggest things I learned in this class was that you might not always agree with someone and you will not change their mind. Respecting each other’s differences of opinions is very important when it comes to accepting each other because these opinions are what make us who we are. There were times in class when I did not agree with some of my classmates at all, and I usually just did not react or respond. The only times I did was when the person was making a comment about people with my views saying we were bad people for believing what we did. I did not agree with that because I respect you and your views so you should respect mine.
I learned about a lot of new ways to teach to students from this class. I had never thought about half of this stuff until this class. I would love to incorporate it into my classes when I teach because it keeps the lecture fun and entertaining. Standing up in front of a class just talking at them the whole time is not fun. Keeping the class engaged in whatever way you can is very important because the ultimate goal as a teacher is for your students to learn something and I believe that this class has given me new tools that can help me be successful with my future teaching abilities.  I would not change any of the aspects of this course except adding a assignment creation before making the rubric to help the flow of it, but keep everything else because I think that all of this things we did were helpful at some point in a person’s teaching career.

Thanks for a great year!! 😁👍💥

#14 4 good computer habits every teacher should know

Summary:
there are 4 steps that every teacher should know about a computer and they are
  1. ability to back up computer
  2. how to import files
  3. keep personal and important information protected and out of wrong hands
  4. keep passwords hidden and private
Each step is important because each one provides a different part to well rounded technology. The backing up of a computer will help with the storage and lack of loss of important documents. Importing files is important because it allows teachers to get different files from all over the place and keeping personal information safe is very important also. It helps keep all information from getting into the wrong hands that could hurt your career or personal life. A password is needed to help keep all of this safe and protected from outside eyes that are not granted access.

Reflection:
This article is full of good advice to help keep your online stuff safe while also providing information that can help boost knowledge of computers and technology. The most important 1 of the 4 to me is keeping the password safe and secure. By doing this, I can trust that I am the only one seeing the information and can keep it confidential.

#16 Facebook Archive

Facebook knows a lot about me. When I downloaded everything Facebook knew about me, it had everything on there from when I first created my page. Every post or comment made on public or private walls was found in that one download. Every message, video, photo, and even website I had visited were all there. That is not something I necessarily like because if someone were to hack my Facebook, they would have everything ever posted by me. This could be a great teaching tool for those who do not think that stuff on the internet matters!!

Fortnite Freenzy

Fortnight is a new game that is taking the world by storm. This online game is free to users all over the world and it is definatly a fan favorite at the moment. The game originally started online that could be accessed freely by a gaming consoule, but the recent launch of the Fortnite Mobile game has taken things to a whole other level. All players have to do to be able to play on their phone is download the game and create an account.
Once signed up, players are launched into a game with 99 other players and the last man standing wins. There are wepons hidden around the game for players to collect and use to help them win the game. While most believe that the game is fun, there is no actual point to palying it. Players can play it at all times of the day, which is where most problems are starting to come from in the classroom. Teachers are having multiple problems in the classroom regarding students and their attention span.
The biggest issue being students are falling alseep during class. They stay up all night playing the game, only to not be able to keep their heads up and eyes open for the class lectures. Teachers are stuggling to find a solution to keeping the children awake in class while also keeping them interested in the lecture. The second biggest issue is students playing the actual game in class on their phones. This can be very distracting to the student, other students, and teacher. There are different things teachers can do to keep comtrol of the class room and students awake.
One thing a teacher could do is, when a student falls asleep, you ask them to stand the rest of class. This keeps the student awake and attentive durring the lecture while still being productive for the other students aswell. Having a phone basket could be another solution. A phone basket is a place designated by the teacher that all students must turn their phones into before class and may abtain them as they walk out the door. Students may still use laptops and other electronics when needed, but the cell phone would stay in the disignated area. While there needs to be changes to correcting the problem, teachers could also use the game to their advantage.
Teachers should be utilizing any resinable means to get the students active and involved. This game could be a major point for class attentivmess and participation. They could use the game as a teaching tool or create game like syneriors where students are learning or quizign each other while the “game” is going on. The teacher can ask questions and whoever gets the answer right first gets to move on to the next round while the others stand in the “dead” box that is at the front of the room. This causes the students to get into the game, learn and practice the information, and still be attentive to the rest of the class once they have been eliminated. All in all, teachers should make the best of situations. If you have a problem, use it to your advantage.
